The Houseplant Shop's Frequently Asked Questions
Where is The Houseplant Shop Located?
We are a small, independent plant nursery based in Thetford Forest. We're not open to the public for visits, as we focus on selling online plants for delivery. Our nursery address is:
The Houseplant Shop, Brookville, Thetford, Norfolk, IP26 4RB, United Kingdom.
How do you grow your plants?
Our plants are all grown in house by our specialists using only the finest natural ingredients. We don't use harsh chemicals or inorganic feeds, and we mix all of our own soil ourselves from single source ingredients to prevent the spread of pests that is commonly seen with premixed branded soil. We only grow inside and normal household temperatures to prevent plants from experiencing a shock when they move to their new homes. Furthermore, we use mostly natural light with the occasional supplementation of low powered LED's, but we do not grow anything under heavy grow lights to prevent shock and colour change when the plants move to their new homes.
Are your plants pest free?
We mix all of our own soil in house to avoid any contamination with any pest eggs, and we only use single sourced sterilized ingredients to prevent any unwanted guests hitching a ride into your home. As we grow all of our plants from seeds or cuttings, we don't buy from nurseries, which removes the risk of them containing pests and infecting the whole shop. The risk when buying from us is heavily reduced compared to a traditional plant shop.
Are the plants packaged securely?
All our British grown plants are expertly packaged up by our in house shipping expert who has seen every type of plant packaging available. Including the good, the bad and the ugly, and the plant damage that inevitable comes with bad packaging. This experience allows her to know exactly the right way to package up each individual plant based on their needs and fragility. If certain plants are particularly fragile and are highly likely to get damaged in the post, this will be stated on the product page. We offer a full live arrival guarantee should the worst happen, so you can buy from us with confidence that you will get what you ordered or your money back.

Are Your Houseplants 100% Peat Free?
Due to the environmental concern, we never use peat at our houseplant nursery. We always mix our own soil to ensure that our plants are environmentally friendly. W're really proud to be featured on the RHS website along with other peat free nurseries.
Why Our Houseplant Shop is 100% Peat-Free
At our houseplant shop, we are committed to sustainability and environmental responsibility, which is why we have made the decision to go 100% peat-free. Here are the key reasons behind this choice:
Environmental Impact: Peatlands are unique ecosystems that act as carbon stores, support diverse wildlife, and help control flooding. Harvesting peat releases significant amounts of stored carbon dioxide, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Since peat grows back at a very slow rate (about 1 mm per year), it is considered a non-renewable resource.
Sustainability: By using peat-free alternatives, we are promoting sustainable horticulture practices. Peat-free growing mediums are made from renewable resources such as coir, wood fibre, and composted bark, which have a lower environmental impact compared to peat.
Supporting Biodiversity: Peatlands are home to many unique species of plants and animals. By choosing peat-free products, we help preserve these habitats and protect the biodiversity they support.
Ethical Practices: Our commitment to being peat-free aligns with our broader mission to adopt ethical and sustainable practices. This includes sourcing from like-minded suppliers, using recycled and recyclable packaging where available, reducing the use of plastics, and minimizing our carbon footprint.
Customer Health: Peat-free alternatives can be just as effective as peat-based products, providing a healthy growing environment for houseplants without the negative environmental consequences.
By producing and promoting peat-free houseplants, we are making a positive impact on the planet and supporting a more sustainable future. We believe that everyone can make a difference, one plant at a time.
